Wonderful Bambino recently asked me to review their one-size 100% bamboo fitted on 16-month-old Erik and sent a green edged diaper for us to test. Not surprisingly, my first impression of the fitted was how soft everything was, including the leg gussets. The bamboo fabric is a super fine, silky terry that has a lovely drape, feel and stretch to it.

Wonderful Bambino fitteds come with either red or green stitching on the edges and feature:

  • A sewn in soaker (you can also purchase fold-to-fit bamboo inserts from Wonderful Bambino or just lay in your own, if you like)
  • Adjustable rise with 4 size settings (3 rows of snaps) to accommodate babies from 12 to 40 pounds
  • Crossover waist snaps for skinnier babies
  • Gentle leg and back elastic

Erik first wore the Wonderful Bambino fitted for a 2-hour nap and it actually lasted well past the nap, so this is definitely a very absorbent diaper. Next, I tested it over night and added one regular bamboo doubler from my stash. This combo kept leaks at bay all night. To get the same absorbency through a nap and beyond, I’d have to double up on prefolds. Is bamboo as thirsty as hemp? Not quite…but then hemp is not this soft and silky!

Unlike some fitteds, which can be challenging to “stuff” completely under a waterproof cover because of bulk or a wide cut, the Wonderful Bambino’s trim style works with every one-size cover in my stash and is easy to completely tuck in. My favorite cover to use with fitted diapers? Definitely Sweet Peas.

So I’m super pleased with not only the absorbing power, but also the great fit of this diaper. At $19.95, it’s a good price for a fantastic fitted that could possibly be your solution for a heavy wetter at nap time or even overnight. Just having one or two of these in your stash would be a valuable asset!

There is a drawback, however, and that’s the drying time. It takes 2 full cycles on my machine to get the diaper completely dry, and this is even after spinning in a high-efficiency washer. To get around this issue, I do one of two things:

  • After running one dryer cycle with all my other diapers, I hang-dry the diaper.
  • After running one dryer cycle with all my other diapers, I’ll toss the diaper in the dryer with my next load of regular household laundry.

Bamboo diapers also get a little bit stiff after many uses and washes, as compared to cotton which stays soft.

I’ve mentioned several times how trim this diaper is. You might be wondering just how absorbent can it be? VERY (which is why it takes a long time to dry). Bulky diapers with lots of fabric layers don’t always translate to super absorbency, and they definitely have their drawbacks. You might have to go up a size (or two) to get clothes to fit right. They might gape at the legs or waist. It can also be tricky fitting all that bulk completely inside the diaper cover. The Wonderful Bambino fitted definitely solves those problems because it truly is highly absorbent without giving your baby a huge, padded bum.

The availability of just two colors of contrasting trim on the edges may or may not be a negative for you. I love colors just as much as the next mama, but with bamboo diapers you usually don’t get as much variety. If Wonderful Bambino added more thread color options in the future, that would be fun, but it’s not a deal-breaker for me (especially since it’s worn with a cover on top). I love this diaper and we have been using it A LOT past the testing phase.

Here are some pictures showing how great this diaper fits on Erik, who is 16 months old and about 22 pounds. The stretchy wings, soft but snug gussets and silky fabric hug him just right, and the diaper stays put no matter how active he gets.

UPDATED 9/21/14

Here is the Wonderful Bambino fitted on my 9 pounds or so newborn, Ingrid. She was seven pounds at birth and is almost 7 weeks old in this picture.

Fitteds are the best for heavy wetters, especially one that have a hemp or bamboo core. I haven’t tried these but I’d love to give them a shot.

before we started part time ECing my son was such a heavy wetter and it was so frustrating! prefolds and fitted diapers were the only one I could really use. but I do love fitted diapers bc they solved my nighttime issues. fitted+hemp insert with PUL or wool = bulletproof

I love bamboo because it’s so soft and absorbent. I do need to use a fleece liner in it though, because my baby is sensitive to wetness. Hopefully she’ll grow out of that. This diaper sounds great for overnight.

First child coming in November..we are doing cloth. From what I see people use not just one brand for their kid. Is there a reason why you would want to have cloth diapers from different companies?

Congrats, Marie! Mothers end up using different brands probably because different diapers serve different purposes. For instance, you might not use the same type/brand for night time that you would during the day. I think moms just like trying different things, too. It’s fun, and you never know what new “favorite” you might discover! ~Anne

Emily, as mentioned in the review, I found this diaper to be trim enough that all my one-size covers work with it, to varying degrees. Flips and similar covers give the best coverage. If you’re using another type of fitted, like a hybrid, it will be much bulkier and you would definitely need a roomier cover. It’s also possible to use your pocket diaper shell as a cover, to save money. As for double sets of snaps, they have never bothered my little ones. ~Anne

My heavy-wetting 2-month-old wears FB size smalls stuffed with Grovia size 2 bamboo/cotton prefolds during the day. That is working really well. At night, she wears a fitted with a Flip.

      May 13, 2014 at 3:08 pm

Hi Christina! I mentioned in the review that all of our (one size) PUL covers have worked with this fitted diaper. Brands like Flip and Sweet Pea offer the most coverage, but there hasn’t been one in my stash that doesn’t coordinate with the Wonderful Bambino fitted. If you look at the photos in the review, you’ll see that snapping up the rise doesn’t create a lot of bulk or cause bunching, and since the soaker is already sewn in, you don’t have to worry about an insert or soaker moving or shifting around. This is really a well-fitting, trim and comfy diaper for my toddler! Thanks for entering the giveaway! ~Anne

Hi Jessie! As I shared in the review, you can choose red or green edging for your diaper. Most bamboo and hemp fitteds do not come in prints or colors, but are simply the natural color of the fabric; hybrid fitteds offer more variety and customization, if that’s important to you, because they are made with a cotton outer. My daughter is still using disposables at night because they co-sleep and she doesn’t want to chance a wet family bed. But I have found fitteds work well when I have the baby during the day.

My daughter has a few of these bamboo diapers and I love how truly absorbent they are, yet trim looking.

We don’t own any fitted, as I just recently discovered them and what they are about.!

Bamboo fitteds are our first choice for our heavy-wetting toddler, and easy for Daddy to put on. As long as he remembers the wool cover too! Fleece pjs on top of all that really makes for a dry bed, no matter what. Her big sister appreciates that, since they share a bed.

I am fairly new to cloth diapering, and have not tried fitters yet, this would be an awesome prize to win! Thanks!

heavy wetting is something I’m worried about – we’re starting with cloth for our baby in July and that has the potential to be a deal breaker for my husband. I definitely plan on trying some fitteds!

we have yet to try a fitted diaper. My lil one is 7 months and has not leaked at night with blueberry diaper , but as he gets older he will need more absorbency .

I am really wanting to start cloth diapering but cant afford the ‘start up cost’ Hopfully I can win a diaper t offset the cost just a little bit.

For my heavy wetter we have to do WAHM hybrid fitteds with wool interlock covers, it is the only thing that get him through the night?

This diaper does look nice and trim. We’re hoping to line/sun dry our diapers so I wonder if that will work with this one, given you’re issues with needing to dry twice. I wouldn’t want it to mildew!

I haven’t tried a fitted on my newborn yet, but they are more appealing the more I research options.

I’m interested in trying these. I have some all in ones that take twice as long to dry so I usually hang then out in the sun (gets rid of stains) & will throw them in the dryer after.

Never used fitted but I have heard they are good to prevent diaper rash, which is something we do deal with.

I like using a stay dry pocket diaper at night usually a bumGenius 4.0 with and extra hemp or bamboo insert.

I heard great things about these diapers! I like that they are one size. I love the green stitching; it’s so cute! I like how trim they are. Totally worth investing in a couple. 🙂 Thank you!
