As you might have already guessed, Wonderful Bambino makes one of my favorite fitted diapers. It’s a super soft and trim nighttime solution. Wonderful Bambino recently added a few more products to their 100% bamboo lineup, and sent a complimentary assortment (pictured above) for me to review: a size 1 (red edge) bamboo prefold, a size 2 (green edge) bamboo prefold, 2 bamboo wipes and 2 bamboo inserts.
Everything shrank about a half inch all around during the initial washing and drying (“prepping”) process, which is typical for bamboo. Here are my thoughts on each.
Wonderful Bambino Prefolds
Made of 100% viscose bamboo, these feel and perform like “luxury” prefolds. The size 1 prefold (red edge) measures 12×13.5 after prepping and fits 4 to 10 pounds. Size 2 (green edge) measures 14×15.5 after prepping and fits 8 to 15 pounds. Both are silky soft and highly absorbent; both have extra layers of fabric sewn down the middle like a traditional prefold. Stitching lines on either side of the middle pad make it easy to trifold the diaper.
The bamboo insert is thicker than the ones that come with imported pocket diapers, is serged around the edge with green thread, and measures 5×13.5.
Here are the Wonderful Bambino size 1 and 2 prefolds folded in thirds next to the insert, to give you some perspective on the sizing.
Wonderful Bambino prefolds and inserts are made to be versatile and work with just about any system you’re already using. Besides working great to boost the absorbency of Wonderful Bambino’s fitted diapers, the inserts can be stuffed or laid into any cover or pocket diaper. Likewise, the prefolds can be used with any diaper cover or pocket. I tried each of them with a “one size” cover to give you a rough idea of the sizing.
As you can see, the size 1 prefold fits more like a medium and the size 2 like a large or extra large. With our cover opened up to its largest setting, the size 2 bamboo prefold is longer, so it must be folded up to fit in the front or back. The size 1 prefold fits well with a cover on the medium or middle rise setting; the insert is about the same. Although it’s rated to fit 4 pounds, you’d need a very roomy newborn cover to accommodate it, and it would have to be folded in at the front or back.
In summary, size 1 seems better suited for infants and size 2 for toddlers.
Can you pin Wonderful Bambino prefolds? Yes! The prefolds work quite well with a Boingo fastener, better in fact than I expected. With some smoother, softer or more delicate fabrics, I’ve found that the little teeth don’t always grip strongly enough. For whatever reason, this hasn’t been an issue with the Wonderful Bambino bamboo prefolds. The Boingo and the diaper both stay put.
In terms of absorbency, the prefolds are super thirsty, even a bit more than the Wonderful Bambino fitted I previously reviewed. I weighed both diapers on the scale and the prefolds are heavier (I made allowance for the snaps on the fitted, which add an ounce or two). And I was pleased to discover that the prefolds don’t take quite as long to dry as the fitted. Both Ingrid (2 months) and Erik (toddler) have worn these overnight with no leaks.
Here is the size 1 pinned on 2-month-old Ingrid:
At $11.50 to $13.00 each (on sale right now for $7.50 and $8.00 respectively), Wonderful Bambino luxury prefolds have a luxury price. Compared to a cotton prefold, they are expensive. But compared to a nighttime fitted diaper, they are quite reasonable. So if you wanted to purchase one or two to get a heavy wetter through the night, as opposed to purchasing an entire stash, it can be affordable.
A three-pack of the bamboo inserts is $17.50 (on sale now for $14.85), and that might be one way you could give bamboo a test drive for a smaller investment.
Wonderful Bambino Wipes
The wipes are 8×8 square and serged in red. Packs of three are $10.00 (on sale now for $7.50) and packs of five are $14.00 (on sale now for $11.00). Folded in half they fit perfectly in a standard wipes case. One side is smooth bamboo and the other is a very fine bamboo terry. This combo makes it perfect for cleaning even the messiest of diapers, while still being easy on a baby’s tender bottom. I love that they hold their shape perfectly and stay silky soft wash after wash.
Cloth wipes are SO easy to use if you’re also doing cloth diapers because everything washes together. Plus, they clean up messes better than disposable wipes and you will use less of them for each change. There’s no need to mix up special wipes solutions or even fold the cloth wipes, although you can certainly do both if you want. I throw all mine in a drawer, grab one or two at changes and wet them with plain warm water.
And now, here’s YOUR chance to try Wonderful Bambino’s new products: one lucky reader will receive a 5-pack of wipes and 2 prefolds (choose your size)!
