January 20, 2013 by Anne Marie 296 Comments

NOTE: This post has been updated as of December 2018 with more diaper cover reviews. We've now tried over 27 different diaper covers on our newborn babies. Using a cover is one of the easiest and most economical ways to diaper a new baby. Anything can work as an insert – newborn prefolds, small flats, and inserts made of microfiber, hemp, bamboo or cotton. Luludew Diaper Cover: Available mainly through diaper services, Luludew has always offered an affordable, practical line for families. Continue Reading

Do One-Size Diapers Fit Newborns?

January 18, 2013 by Anne Marie 271 Comments

Lots of cloth diapers and covers are marketed as fitting from "birth to potty training." Is that really true? It all depends on the size of your newborn and the brand of diaper. Some run big and some run small. And even the smaller one-size diapers won't be as tiny or as trim as newborn diapers. But some do work in a pinch. I was curious about some of the one-size diapers and covers we have in our stash, so I tried them on Erik to see what the fit was like. He was 7 pounds 9 ounces at birth Continue Reading

The bamboo insert is two-side and is color coordinated to match the diaper: Our Little Green Bird diaper is very soft and absorbent. I like how the insert has two sides Continue Reading

Mini Pad Fold (a Newborn Flat Diaper Fold)

January 14, 2013 by Anne Marie 17 Comments

There's a first time for everything and for me that includes trying out flat diapers on my newborn son, Erik. In November I posted a quick tutorial about how to do the easy "pad fold." It takes a mere 10 or 20 seconds and is very simple. Here's the photo again for a basic pad fold. I use this easy fold for my older babies: I quickly discovered that I could not use the pad fold for Erik, however. It renders a rectangle-shaped diaper that's too long to fit in his newborn covers. And when I Continue Reading

When a Child Needs You All Night….and All Morning

January 11, 2013 by Anne Marie 6 Comments

Erik has hit his first growth spurt. Just two weeks old, he wanted to nurse almost on the hour last night and through the morning. I know there's a good reason for this; the demand will help increase my supply. But needless to say, I'm a bit groggy today....and sore. My new mama breastfeeding blister was just beginning to heal but after the marathon last night......ouch! And I feel like I was basically robbed of any meaningful sleep. But, of course, it's up and at 'em the next morning, no matter Continue Reading
