Updated for 2026!
If you’re pregnant and having a hard time trying to find modest dresses and skirts, and tops without plunging necklines, this post is for you. After multiple pregnancies, I’ve found a lot of great places to shop for conservative, but attractive styles. We all have different reasons for wanting to wear a more conservative style. Comfort, body type, personal style, religious convictions and even something as simple as trying to stay warmer can all come into play.
It also goes without saying that there are lot of different definitions of what constitutes “modest” apparel, and that is NOT the focus of today’s post. My round-up encompasses a wide range of styles so you can hopefully find your look among them.
Retailers That Sell Modest Clothing
Motherhood Maternity
What Motherhood offers depends on the season, and the trends, but they are pretty good about stocking some basics each year. . Some years, you can find modest and flattering styles, but other times you’ll be out of luck. It pays to check in at a local brick-and-mortar store since the shorter skirts are usually bigger sellers. Average prices for their longer skirts range from $20 to $40. http://www.motherhoodmaternity.com
Amazon
A quick search for modest maternity reveals a big selection of cute dresses, skirts and tops. Be sure to thoroughly check the reviews, especially those that include photos. Make sure the fabric isn’t too thin or clingy (common issues) and that your purchase qualifies for a return.

New Creation Women’s Apparel
Here you’ll find modest classics that are always in style. The featured image at the top of this post is a beautiful denim/linen skirt I’ve worn through several pregnancies. New Creation’s has carved out a special niche of feminine styles crafted from premium fabrics.

You can shop activewear and casual styles in both misses and maternity sizes. Their Always Skirt is stretchy, comfortable and available for under $30 in a lot of prints and solids. Custom lengths available!

Old Navy / Gap
This retailer reliably churns out maternity basics nearly every year at affordable prices. Try both in store and online options for best selection. Click here to shop.

Target
The Ingrid & Isabel line is Target’s foray into the world of maternity fashion. It’s hit or miss in terms of what’s available each year, but at the very least you can always find basics like layering pieces and separates.

Angel Maternity
I was impressed by the variety of styles offered here, including maxi and midi and knee length. Whether you’re a tall, petite, curvy or slim expectant mother, Angel offers plenty of flattering fits to choose from. Click here to shop.

Others Places to Look for Modest Clothing
Since maternity styles change with the season, Ebay is one of the best places to find discontinued dresses, skirts and tops in the styles you prefer. Suggested key words to use in your searches: “long maternity” “modest maternity” and “maternity maxi.” You can also search by brand, for example “Old Navy Maternity Dress.”

Use my referral code @alicebright for $10 credit. Search new and used maternity listings using terms like “long denim skirt” or “maternity peasant top” or “long maternity dress” and see what comes up. Don’t forget to check specifically for your favorite maternity brands.

Super Cute Dresses
Seasoning drops make this a fun store to shop…and follow! Lots of prints and colors, both maternity and nursing-friendly. Prices range from $60 to over $100, but there are occasional clearance sales. Click here to shop.
Phyllis Jean’s Maternity Clothes
For years, Phyllis Jean has offered her basic 10-gore maternity denim skirt. She can also do custom sizing. The site also sells some cute button-down cotton maternity shirts. http://www.phyllisjean.net

Sewing Your Own Maternity Clothes
Etsy
One very pretty and flattering maternity skirt that I discovered on Etsy is the Florinda pattern. Availability varies. It’s an original design by Angela Coffman. The pattern includes 3 maternity skirt styles plus a half slip. I’ve made several skirts out of this pattern and love them! You can also just search “maternity skirt pattern” and see what comes up.

A wide variety of maternity dress and skirt patterns offered here, most of them discontinued. Most of the “short” skirt patterns can be easily converted to “long” with extra fabric. http://www.grandmashouse.ws
