Geffen Baby Flat Diapers and Wipes Review & Giveaway

September 2, 2015 by Anne Marie 98 Comments

Spread it around!

geffenflats2

Lots of flat diapers have been featured on the blog this year! Today’s review features a unique, made-in-the-USA diaper: hemp jersey flats from my affiliate, Geffen Baby. Geffen flats are available in one size, with light green stitching around the edges. Each flat diaper retails for $8.50. I’ll also share my experiences with Geffen Baby cloth wipes, which come in packages of 10 and are made of the same jersey fabric but with darker green stitching.

Hemp Jersey Flat

Made of 60% hemp and 40% organic cotton, this flat measures about 24.5″ by 26.5″ before washing. It’s not an exact square, but that is typical with many natural fiber diapers. After washing, my Geffen flat shrank to about 23″ by 25.5.” The serged edges do curl up after washing and drying and don’t stay flat; this may bother some but it’s not a concern to me.

Pad folded, the Geffen Baby flat diaper measures about 11″ by 4.75″ inches.

geffenflat7

It’s very close in size when folded to the Geffen Baby hemp jersey prefold – size small. So the size range for the Geffen flat diaper is roughly 0 to 6 months.

geffenflat8

A Boingo or Snappi works “ok” with the smooth hemp jersey, but doesn’t grip as tightly as I would like. A diaper pin is ideal. However you decide to fasten, the Geffen flat will only work for a small baby. And since I don’t have a newborn or small baby right now (Ingrid is over a year old), I’ll demo on a baby doll. 🙂

gefffenflat5

We didn’t use fasteners at all. I mainly used our Geffen flat diapers pad folded in Ingrid’s newborn covers and small covers. When she reached “medium” size, the flat was too small to give adequate coverage and absorbency. Since it’s only offered in one size right now, I will definitely say that a larger size is on my “hope” list. However, I know that increasing the size while keeping the price affordable is a delicate balance.

geffenflat4

We really love the softness, smoothness and absorbency of these Geffen flats; as a bonus, they wash and dry more quickly and easily than the multi-layered Geffen prefolds. And of course, we love supporting a USA-made product!

Since Geffen flats do run small, you can repurpose them as a doubler, burp cloth, lovey, etc.

If you want a much bigger flat, the new Geffen Baby Fladdle (hemp fleece diaper/blanket) is about 30″ square. I personally prefer the smooth jersey over the fleece, however. The Fladdle is also priced a bit more at $12.48 each.

Hemp Jersey Wipes

I also purchased a pack of single-layer Geffen Baby hemp jersey wipes to try out. They are made of the same fabric as the flat diaper (a smooth hemp/cotton blend). After washing and drying they are about 8″ by 7.5″ inches, so again, not a perfect square. They are $12.34 for a package of ten, which is a really great deal.

geffenflat6

Since they are one thin layer, these hemp jersey wipes are easy to store and don’t take up much room like bulkier/thicker wipes do. The hemp-blend fabric is super durable. They get most jobs done just fine, but for big messes I prefer a wipe with a nubbier texture. If you also like to have some cloths on hand with a little bit of scrubbing power, Geffen Baby does have a hemp/French terry wipe. It’s on my “to try” list.

Please share your thoughts and questions about Geffen Baby below, and enter to win a flat diaper and package of wipes for yourself! This giveaway is open to USA residents only. Good luck!

I would really like to try their flats. I started my CDIng experience with AIOs, and pretty quickly realized that I actually liked the more “old fashioned” methods better. Now we get a lot of use out of prefolds, and I can’t wait to try flats– and I’ve heard such good things about Geffens! Great review, thank you!

I’ve heard such great things about Geffen products! We had received 1 sample Geffen wipe once, and it’s both soft and a bit “scrubby” at the same time. I think it will be perfect for those sticky poos and I hope we get some more before baby arrives.

I have a pack of the super absorbers from Geffen and, honestly, they aren’t my favorite. I feel like they don’t hold enough to be the only insert for my 3 month old, and they are also a little wide, like too wide to lay flat in my Applecheeks size 1. But I would love to see how the flat works, and we can always use more wipes! We really go through wipes between my 3 month old and my 2 year old who is potty trained but uses them as toilet paper (we use family cloth).

We also use the Newborn absorbers, they are great for small newborns! We have just tried the “super absorbers” as our 2 month old is a heavy wetter. I often use them with the newborn insert in a cover and they work well for her!

I’m wondering if you think the flat folded around one of the GB inserts would boost the absorbancy enough to use in a one size cover or pocket for an older kid? I like the idea of flats that dry more quickly than prefolds (which I’m planning to use to replace microfiber in our pockets and padfold in covers to send to daycare), but I want to make sure to add enough absorbancy.

I haven’t tried the Geffen inserts yet, but I think your idea could work, as long as it’s not an older, heavy-wetting toddler. Also, because of the smaller size of this flat, you’d have to be really careful about where you placed it in the cover (towards the back for a girl and towards the front for a girl) because it’s not long enough when folded to completely fill the cover. ~Anne

Geffen is my favorite of all time! We use their prefolds, fitteds and absorbers. I completely agree they don’t do well with snappis so I’ve just started trifolding them and stuff them in a pocket. I always add a super absorber on top of my son’s night time diapers and it keeps him from getting redness/eczema flares from being in a diaper 11-12 hours.

The jersey is really really trim and the hemp fleece is so soft! (And stays somewhat soft when wet rather than getting firm/stiff like most natural fibers do). No stay dry liner needed when using them. I would love to try out the Geffen flat and the wipes! Thanks for the chance at this giveaway!

I own only 6 of the geffen flats and a few wipes already, and even though they show a little wear after 3 years of vigorous diapering with my first, I still use them to stuff pockets for my newborn (who’s a very heavy wetter) and they still are sooooo absorbent! My favorite flats I own.
