Make Your Own Hair Detangler and Save Money

July 30, 2013 by Anne Marie 13 Comments

Ever since I finished reading Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey last month, I've been dealing with my wavy hair differently. No more constant shampooing, no more wringing or brushing wet hair and no more wet cuts at the salon. While searching for an alternative to the hair detangler I'm constantly buying for my daughter and myself, I discovered a do-it-yourself recipe that works just fine. While detangling sprays and creams aren't expensive, the cost does add up at a couple of bucks a bottle. Continue Reading

Why Little Children Don’t Need Toys

June 29, 2013 by Anne Marie 14 Comments

The plumber paid us a visit a few weeks ago to work on the kitchen sink. When the job was done, he made his way through the living room on his way to the front door. He stopped, did a double take and looked down at the floor. "Are your kids playing with bottle caps?" he asked in disbelief. "Yes," I replied. "I mean, who needs toys anyway?" The plumber laughed and squatted next to the boys in a very congenial manner so he could get a closer look at the proceedings. My two oldest boys Continue Reading

How to Treat Croup Attacks at Home

June 27, 2013 by Anne Marie 14 Comments

A croupy cough is very distinct; many parents say it sounds like a barking seal. Along with the cough, children often breathe very noisily, or may experience stridor. And because croup causes the throat and windpipe to become inflamed and swollen, little ones with croup often get scared and panicky. In the middle of her coughing attacks, our daughter Catherine would tell us "I can't breathe!" or "I can't swallow!" Sometimes, the coughing was so violent, she would throw up. Catherine is Continue Reading

How to Make a Beautiful Strawberry “Rose” Garnish

May 14, 2013 by Anne Marie 18 Comments

My Mother's Day cake needed a pretty garnish, and I had a basket of strawberries just waiting to fill the bill. However, I wanted something different than the usual method of slicing and fanning the berries out. So I Googled around and was struck by one photo in particular; it was a strawberry cut to look like a rose. What a perfect garnish for Mother's Day! After a couple of clumsy attempts, I executed a decent rose to bloom on top of my pineapple cake. Here's the method I used. #1 Pick a Continue Reading

Quick and Easy Ideas for Garden Statues

May 5, 2013 by Anne Marie 12 Comments

I love and appreciate beautiful landscaping, but don't have the time or talent to do anything very elaborate. Fortunately, if you have a nice focal piece to work with like a lovely statue, monument or bird bath, the setting is not too difficult to execute. Here are a few outdoor shrines we spotted in our local community. The fourth photo shows how a family simply placed a statue of Christ in the crook of an old tree for a very nice effect. A few more from local neighborhoods: With just Continue Reading
