Over the years, I’ve reviewed LOTS of newborn cloth. I’m often asked, “What did you do when your newborn started leaking out of her diapers?” Invariably, the diapers are still fitting just fine, but they aren’t holding enough liquid. Babies’ absorbency needs change very quickly. If you’re using disposables, the only answer is to buy the next size up. With cloth diapers there’s an easier solution: try adding small sized inserts to get more mileage out of your newborn diapers.

The newborn pictured above is my lovely niece and goddaughter, Evangeline, who arrived last month! My sister-in-law received a selection of newborn-sized Geffen Absorbers to try out in exchange for a review: the Quick Absorber and the Super Absorber.
Compared to other products on the market, Geffen’s hemp content is stellar; both of the these inserts feature 5 layers of hemp. As a plus, they are made here in the USA. Quick Absorbers are hemp and cotton jersey and Super Absorbers are a mixture of hemp and cotton fleece, with the percentage being 60/40 on both.

Geffen Absorbers will need to be washed at least 3 or 4 times before use.
They are durable and very soft. But the best feature is how much absorbency you get from such a trim little insert. They barely add any bulk at all, even in a tiny newborn diaper. They are the perfect solution to those early weeks when newborn diapers fit great, but your baby’s output is increasing.
Here are just a couple of ways you can use them:
- Tucked inside a newborn prefold (below left)
- Doubled up and laid in a newborn cover (below middle)
- Added to a newborn all-in-one diaper (below right)
Geffen inserts are less bulky than microfiber AND the hemp/cotton fabric isn’t prone to odors building up. Hemp and cotton do stain easily, though, so I keep mine looking nice with the Buncha Farmers natural stain stick.

Which insert is more absorbent? The Super Absorbers win this one, holding approximately three ounces of liquid versus two.
