The Funky Fluff 2.0 Stay Dry Diaper

Note: Funky Fluff diapers are no longer sold.

Several years ago, I reviewed the Funky Fluff 1.0 bamboo diaper, and it quickly became one of my all-time favorite brands. This brand released version 2.0 in 2013 (bamboo) and early 2014 (stay-dry). Recently, they sent me a complimentary 2.0 diaper stay-dry diaper to review and share with you.

Funky Fluff is a Canadian collaboration between two close friends (with five children between them) who wanted to design cute, functional and affordable diapers. There are a lot of great features packed into each diaper, as you’ll see from my review below.

The Yellow Submarine diaper I received is accented with dolphin-gray snaps:

Did you notice from the picture above how trim this diaper is, even with both inserts inside?

Basic Features of the 2.0 Stay Dry Diaper:

  • No-pill suedecloth lining
  • “Hidden” snap at front and back of diaper for attaching the inserts
  • Snap the rise up or down to get four sizes: newborn, small, medium and large
  • Double row of snaps allows you to adjust leg and waist openings separately
  • Crossover snaps for newborns/skinny babies
  • Hip snaps to prevent sagging
  • Wide pocket openings at front and back
  • Includes a small stay-dry insert and a large stay-dry insert, which can be stuffed, snapped or laid in the shell
  • Fits babies from 7 to 35 lbs.
  • Waterproof PUL on the outside and a PUL strip of fabric on the inside front of the waistband for extra protection
  • Retail price of $20.99

Suedecloth is durable, smooth, resistant to stains and easy to get messes off of (whether you scrape, spray or dunk and swish).

What are the two inserts like? One is small and one is large; they are made with 4 layers of microfiber plus a top “stay-dry” microsuede layer which can go right up against a baby’s skin. The larger insert has a folding line, which helps if you want to make it smaller. Both inserts can be attached to the inside of the diaper by means of a snap. What all this means, practically speaking is:

  • You can use one or both together
  • You can stuff them into the pocket
  • You can snap them into the shell
  • You can lay them in the shell
  • You can fold the large insert to fit smaller babies

Because there are two pocket openings, the inserts will come out in the wash if you’ve stuffed them in. No need to get your fingers wet or dirty. If you use the diaper as an AI2 and snap the inserts in, they’ll stay attached during laundering. No need to search for inserts in a big pile of clean diapers.

While I have used our Funky Fluff bamboo diapers overnight for the infant stage, I’ve found that this stay-dry diaper is more reliable during the day time. It can handle nap time with no problem when both inserts are used together. Depending on how your baby wets, you might have better luck with the inserts snapped in or stuffed into the pocket; sometimes it just takes a little bit of experimentation.

The main reason I’m drawn to Funky Fluff diapers is the fit. I’ve used them on a newborn, a 6 month old and a toddler; they fit beautifully at any age. Several factors contribute to the great fit – double snaps, hip snaps, stretchy wings, high-quality fabric and of course, the cut of the diaper itself. Add all this the versatility and marvelous color combos and you’ve got a brand that I think is worth splurging on.

Are there any drawbacks? Of course, since no diaper is perfect or works the same for everyone. Price is a possible impediment; I can’t have an entire stash of these (wouldn’t that be great??). If you prefer hook & loop, it’s not an option. Fastening three snaps at the waist might be an issue for some people (although I think it contributes to a great fit).

One other thing I would change is to add a 3rd row of rise snaps. This would help the front to lie flat and not pucker out, which tends to happen more as my baby starts moving around.

Speaking of fit, let’s see it on 7-month-old Ingrid:

They also fit Erik, my slim 2-year-old.

I mentioned before that this is a one-size diaper we’ve used on our newborns. Both Erik and Ingrid wore Funky Fluff as brand new babies. They truly do get small enough to fit around little bird legs and keep messes contained. Not many one-size diapers can claim this.

If you are interested in trying this diaper as a cover, the shells can be bought separately. This really adds to the brand’s versatility.

Here’s the color line-up:
