Winning Colors Baby is Lindsay McGovern’s medium for sewing “custom creations for your little winner.” She sent me a complimentary tester to sample and share with you, and has also offered a giveaway (more details below)!
You can choose from an AIO, an AI2 and a cover in a variety of fabrics, and you can fine-tune options like snap colors and placement, inner lining and sizing. Mothers can also mail their own fabric, or “mix and match” two different fabrics, both which really expand the customization options. Sizes offer are Newborn, Small, Medium and Large, plus a one-size option for $5 extra. I’ve enjoyed checking into Lindsay’s Facebook page where she posts her in-progress and completed diaper projects. Just today, she announced a new product addition: cotton velour/cotton knit baby wipes.
For my complimentary tester diaper, I chose a small sized cover for 2-month-old Ingrid, since we use mostly prefolds and flats. For the inner lining, I picked microfleece instead of microsuede, and gender neutral coordinating snaps. For something a bit different, I also opted for a side-snapping design, instead of snaps on the front. “Enchanted Forest” is the name of this pretty aqua and white print.
The bottom right photo above shows the extra hip snap that makes Lindsay’s design more unique. It enables you to get a more snug fit at the waist without tightening the leg openings too much. This feature was a result of feedback from Lindsay’s initial diaper testers, and I’ve found it to be very useful. Almost all of my children end up with chunky little legs at some point, but not a big belly.
Here is the semi-custom cover opened up. The microfleece is very plush and cozy, the back elastic is very gentle and front flap is handy for holding a diaper in place. I’m really happy with how perfectly the size small cover coordinates with the small diapers (flats and prefolds) in our current system.
Because it’s very trim in the crotch, it hasn’t provided enough coverage over Ingrid’s fitted diapers.
The fit is excellent, too. Side-snapping diapers have less bulk at the front and result in a smooth and trim appearance. The cover easily accommodates flats and prefolds, and will also tolerate an extra doubler added in there. However, the trim design provide enough cover overage Ingrid’s fitted diapers (Tots Bots and Wonderful Bambino). However, I think it would probably work with the simple cotton “prefold” fitteds.
Since microfleece needs to be washed when it’s damp or soiled, our Winning Colors Baby cover is different than a typical waterproof “wipe clean and re-use” cover. However, I do love the softness of the microfleece lining, especially around the leg gussets, and if I change Ingrid frequently (before the moisture from the diaper hits the fleece) we can actually re-use the cover a time or two before washing. The fleece is also very stain-resistant and dries fast, so our custom cover doesn’t require any special care compared to others in my collection.
As for workmanship, I haven’t noted one flaw on this cover. Seams are neat with no loose threads and snap placement is nice and even.
This is actually one my favorite covers for Ingrid right now. It’s beautiful, cozy and looks so cute on her! And I love sharing with others that it was made by a WAHM (work-at-home-mom).
