A Brief History of Cloth Diapers

August 9, 2012 by Anne Marie 34 Comments

Wrapping a disposable diaper around a baby and tossing it in the trash when full is a far cry from the way our great-grandmothers diapered their children. And even though I do a lot of cloth diapering, I know that my experience is very different from a mother of two centuries ago in America. Because I love history (my major in college) it seemed like a fun idea to take a trip down memory lane and peek in on the ladies of yesteryear as they cared for their babies' bottoms. Let's start first Continue Reading

Overnight Solutions for Cloth Diapering

April 20, 2012 by Anne Marie 94 Comments

Many cloth diapering mothers use disposables at night because of heavy wetters. I can understand. For the longest time we were having leaks at night until I asked around and got some good advice from other cloth diapering mothers. I've actually tried several different diapering options and all of them have helped my babies to stay dry all night. Here they are: Hemp Prefolds: Pair a Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefold and a Thirsties Hemp doubler in the cover of your choice (you can find Thirsties Continue Reading

Why I Almost Gave Up on Cloth Diapers

March 29, 2012 by Anne Marie 38 Comments

I became interested in cloth diapers for one simple reason: to save money. Benjamin was our third child and money was getting tight. One day, while browsing through the ads in the back of my baby magazine, I saw an offer for a free fitted diaper. It was a no-strings-attached offer. If it didn't work, I could send it back. The idea of trying any free baby product seemed fun to me. So I filled out the form and received my free fitted about a week later. There was a long list of instructions Continue Reading

I could never do that!

March 6, 2012 by Anne Marie 13 Comments

Quite often, when I tell someone that I have 5 children (update...now there are 6!), or that I home school, or that we raise and butcher our own meat, or that we cloth diaper, etc. etc. they will respond like this: "Oh, I could never do that!" Of course, this is not meant to be a criticism; they are just saying they think they can't do it for one reason or another. That response always brings to mind a saying I heard once from Dave Ramsey: "It doesn't matter if you think you can, or if you Continue Reading

How to Store Cloth Diapers: An Easy Storage Solution!

December 13, 2011 by Anne Marie 4 Comments

Although I've got three children in cloth right now, it doesn't really matter how many you're diapering before the stuff begins to pile up. Diapers, covers, wipes and all the accessories.........even the roomiest changing table can quickly begin to overflow! Luckily, I discovered the perfect solution to my storage problems: a shoe organizer with a sturdy metal frame and durable canvas pockets. We purchased it at Walmart and had it put together in 15 minutes. The shoe compartments Continue Reading
