How to Get a Mobile Phone Cheaply, or Even Free!

I was astounded to learn that the average cell phone bill for an American is about $114 per month right now. That’s a shame because there are so many low-cost options out there. And that’s not just a platitude. My son’s flip phone with unlimited talk and text is only $9 per month; my limited smart phone data plan is only $19.

If you’re on a very tight budget, a fixed income, or already classify as low income, then you should definitely look into low-cost or free wireless.

But before we even get into cheap cell phones, stop and ask yourself two important questions:

• Am I paying for a bundle with services I don’t even use?
• How can I cut my usage to save money?

We should all curb our wireless use as much as possible, not just because it’s cheaper, but because it can be addictive and in many cases harmful.
