Just in time to welcome my co-reviewer’s newborn girl, our friends at Geffen Baby sent out their fitted diaper for a review. Katie’s little Evangeline tested the size extra-small, and my Mary Kate (age 15 months) tried the medium.
Geffen fitteds are 100% bleached cotton, made in Pakistan, and are available in the following sizes:
XS: Approx. preemie-10 lb
Small: Approx 9-15 lb
Medium: Approx 15-24 lb
Large: Approx 21-30+ lb
These are what some mothers call “pre fitteds” because they are made with the same multi-layered cotton as a traditional prefold, but with elasticized legs and long wings to give a better, trimmer fit.
Once prepped, they quilt up and get nice and fluffy like a typical prefold does.
Use Geffen fitteds with your favorite diaper fastener, or just wrap around your baby along with a snug-fitting cover. For extra absorbency, I highly recommend Geffen’s super trim hemp Absorbers.
The rise (front) of the diaper is fold-to-fit, which means you can adjust it slightly if it’s too high. The drawback is that folding the front under will create some extra bulk at the front.
Katie experienced this with her newborn, Evangeline, who was actually 10 pounds at birth. You can see in the photo below that there is still plenty of room to grow with the size extra-small. It was harder to get good coverage with a typical tiny newborn cover, so Katie suggested using something roomier over the Geffen fitted. If your newborn is much smaller, the Geffen extra-small may be a bit too large right at birth.
Here is Evangeline wearing the Geffen newborn fitted with a one-size Buttons cover:
Mary Kate fits into her medium perfectly, no folding down needed. In a few months, she can easily move up to the large. I used my Geffen fitted with roomier covers like Flip, Imagine and Blueberry.
We prepped our Geffen fitteds at least 4 times before first use. They will continue to increase in absorbency with subsequent washes. Katie’s newborn was able to wear her fitted all by itself through a nap. I was able to do the same for Mary Kate with the addition of one Geffen Absorber (which is a super trim hemp insert that adds hardly any bulk at all).
The white cotton fabric is soft and durable, though not quite as soft as unbleached. Like all the other Geffen products we’ve tried, these diapers are well made with quality fabrics and stitching.
They are super easy to wash and rinse clean, and dry time is average whether you use a clothesline or your dryer’s low/medium setting.
Geffen Baby fitteds range in price from $7.26 to $9.78 each, depending on the size you choose.
