You might think that it’s necessary to pay $20 to $25 for a good quality AI2 (All-in-Two) cloth diaper with inserts, especially if it’s made of something besides microfiber. Today’s review might just convince you otherwise!
I had the good fortune several months ago to stumble upon the BB Cloth 2-in-1 Hybrid, which consists of a waterproof shell + 2 bamboo inserts that snap in. The price of just $15.50 grabbed my immediate attention, as did the print choices, which are fun and bright and totally unique. Since summer was just around the corner, I splurged on the patriotic owl diaper, which Ingrid ended up wearing this 4th of July. More recently, I also grabbed the hot air balloon print called Up, Up and Away – plus the My Little Bear print for my sister-in-law to try (see photos further down).
Glenda at BB Cloth has once again offered to sponsor a diaper giveaway through my blog, so find out how to enter at the end of this post!
The BB Cloth 2-in-1 is an adjustable one-size diaper with two rows of snaps on the front rise which give you 3 rise settings (small, medium and large). There are also crossover snaps at the waist so you can fasten it very tightly for a tiny/skinny infant.
Each BB Cloth 2-in-1 includes a pair of bamboo blend inserts that can be snapped into the microsuede-lined diaper shell. One insert is smaller than the other, which not only keeps the diaper more trim overall, but allows you to use the smaller one by itself if your baby is very young.
The small one measures 11 x 5.5 and the large is 13.5 x 5.5. They can actually be snapped to each other and then snapped into the shell.
Note – you have to lift up the brand tag at the inside back of the diaper to expose the snap that the inserts fasten onto. See top photo below.
There’s also a pocket inside the shell which opens at front and back, if you prefer to stuff diaper inserts.
The diaper shell features an inner gusset sewn down the middle, which is designed to help keep #2 messes better contained.
Performance: With 2 bamboo inserts included, this is a very absorbent diaper that your baby should be able to wear through a nap, and possibly even at night. Both my sister-in-law’s heavy wetter (8 months old) and my Ingrid (almost 2) wore diaper with no leaks through nap time. Ingrid can actually wear it overnight; she’s an average wetter.
The PUL strip at front is great for tummy sleepers who tend to wick moisture out of the waistband and onto clothing.
Although some “AI2” diapers have a wipeable interior, which can be a handy feature, there is an advantage to the white microsuede lining in this shell. Wherever it touches your baby’s skin it gives a comfortable “stay dry” feeling, as opposed to PUL which can feel cold and damp.
The pocket is wide, easy to stuff, and the snaps inside and out are of great quality.
Care: This is a very easy care diaper, thanks to the microsuede inner lining which doesn’t hold onto stains easily. The bamboo inserts needed just 1 wash before we started using the diapers full time. My sister-in-law and I both found that the diaper shell dries very quickly and the inserts take 1 average cycle or less (if you have an HE washer it cuts down on dry time). The inserts stay fastened to the diaper in the washer/dryer about half the time.
Fit: With both inserts together, the diaper is somewhat bulky, but still not as much as a fitted. With just one insert inside, it’s noticeably slimmer. Here are side profiles for comparison.
The double snaps on the wings give you the option of angling the waist and leg snaps one way or the other (if you need one tighter or looser than the other).
When it comes to appearance, BB Cloth has a unique feature called Perfect Bum. Each diaper is cut the same way. No more hunting for the right bum print.
Katie’s youngest – Roderick – wears the diaper with the rise snapped up once (medium). Because his legs and waist are very chubby, she used the largest setting for both waistband and legs.
Her oldest – Gareth – wears the diaper completely snapped open (large) with the largest setting for both waistband and legs. Katie’s nickname for Gareth is “Little Bear,” so this was the perfect print for him, however she would have preferred that the graphic and lettering be just a bit smaller so you could see the whole image better when viewing from the back.
Ingrid, my 2-year-old, is small to average, so even at 2 years she has some room to grow both in the waist and legs. Like Gareth, she also needs the rise completely open at size large.
Katie did notice that after Roderick had been crawling around for a while, the diaper should shift and bunch up a bit, although it did not affect performance. Gathering in the waist a bit more helped with this issue.
Value: At just $15.00 with two bamboo inserts included, I think the BB Cloth 2-in-1 is a really good value with an attractive price. The three separate components can be used in other ways, too, giving this diaper system added versatility. Use the shell as a diaper cover, or stuff your favorite pocket diaper with the bamboo inserts. You can also stuff whatever you want into the pocket of the 2-in-1 because it’s very generously sized.
