Thanks to my friends at SmartSnugs, I was given the opportunity to try
the brand new AI2 diaper in exchange for my honest opinion!
I was very excited when Smart Snugs announced they had added an All-in-Two (AI2) diaper to their product line. What makes this diaper stand out from other competitors?
The nice folks at Smart Snugs sent me one so I could satisfy my curiosity! The product color is turquoise, although I would describe it more as a soft kelly green. Here it is at the largest and small settings; all Smart Snugs diapers are designed to fit from approximately 8 to 35 pounds. The waist snaps can be overlapped to get a snug fit on smaller babies, and the hip snaps keep the wings from sagging and shifting.
The outer material of the shell is made of a buttery soft bamboo cotton blend. This smooth, pliable fabric is a nice change from slick, cold PUL. Back elastics give your baby’s bum a cute “ruffled” look, and when you open the cover up there are double gussets inside, plus bamboo fleece flaps to hold the insert in and provide a “stay dry” effect. No need to stuff or snap anything in. Why is the bamboo that dark color? It’s called charcoal bamboo, and is relatively new in the cloth world. I’ve heard that it has antimicrobial qualities, but have been unable to verify. However, it does hide stains really well!
The cover can be used with other diapers as well (flats, prefolds, inserts).
At left (no insert) – at right (insert tucked in):
The insert is also quite ingenious, and I think Smart Snugs put a lot of thought into its construction. Not only does it have double gussets sewn in (giving you double protection against leaks), but there’s a white waterproof backing. I found this combo to be highly effective for absorbing wetness and keeping it locked in. And because the insert has that waterproof backing, you can take it out when soaked or soiled and replace it with a new one. N
Unlike a lot of AI2 diapers, the SmartSnug AI2 has a (mostly) wipe-clean interior. That means you can reuse it if only the insert is damp or soiled. I would actually prefer NO fleece flap at all so that the shell would be truly 100% wipeable.
What’s inside the 6-layer insert? There’s one layer of bamboo fleece on top to wick moisture away and keep your baby cool and comfy, followed by one layer of bamboo/cotton, and then 3 thirsty layers of quick-absorbing microfiber. The final layer is the PUL backing. So each layer serves a very useful purpose, yet the insert is incredibly trim.
Here’s a close-up showing the double gussets on both the insert and the cover:
This truly has worked well as a one-size diaper for us. I like the fit on everyone from 7 month old Erik to Samuel (3 and potty training).
The NatureSnug AI2 dried in the same time as all the other diapers in my “mixed load” of laundry. I love not having to run extra long cycles. It also did not escape my notice that stains seem to just disappear into the charcoal bamboo fabric. This is not just because of the darker color; it’s stay-dry bamboo fleece, which is less likely to hold onto stains than regular bamboo.
Besides the fact that the shell is lined with fleece and not truly “wipe clean,” my only other issue with our AI2 has been that moisture can wick (note: different from leaking) onto the soft outer fabric through the leg bands if Erik goes too long in the diaper. This wouldn’t happen if the shell was 100% PUL.
Smart Snugs offers a 1-year warranty that covers any diaper component which is defective and keeps the diaper from performing properly. I think this is a very solid warranty, and can help you feel good about your purchase, although I would just add one caveat. They can refuse a warranty claim for “failure to follow recommended washing instructions.” This includes not line-drying your covers and/or drying inserts on medium or high heat. I never line dry the covers in my stash, and will readily admit to drying my Smart Snugs on medium heat (haven’t noticed any adverse effects). I’m pointing this out just because customers should always be aware that every warranty, no matter how good, comes with certain conditions and restrictions.
I am 100% pleased with my NatureSnug AI2 experience, and from the looks of the Smart Snugs Facebook page, it seems I’m not alone. There’s probably going to be a clamor for more color choices (right now the options left are turquoise, red and white). Smart Snugs has offered to give my readers a pretty amazing deal, just for this giveaway period: get 15% off your entire purchase (no minimum) with code zephyrsnugs15plz !
This sale is just about to end, but if you hurry you can still get the NatureSnug AI2 cover I reviewed for only $16.15 and a 3-pack of the 6-layer charcoal bamboo inserts for just $19.13. There’s also a SimpleSnug version which is standard PUL with microfleece flaps inside; at 15% it’s now $12.75.
