There’s a funny story to go along with the very creative name of Melissa’s cloth diapering shop: her middle son was the original “Chunkabutt” and definitely earned the title by needing to wear size 12 month clothes when he was just 3 months old! Wow! The two “T’s” in her store name are capitalized as a nod to her oldest son, Matthew.
Melissa sent two of her handmade diapers for review. And to make things even more exciting, one of them was a fitted (for Susanna) and one was a pocket (for Sam). This is the very first fitted diaper we’ve tried!
A picture is worth a thousand words. Look at the great workmanship and the one-of-a-kind prints:
Susanna’s fitted is a pink designer cotton print with coordinating snaps, one layer of heavy organic bamboo fleece, and then a plush cotton velour lining (the aqua-colored fabric) which touches baby’s skin. The rise can be folded down to get the fit you want. Three super absorbent soakers are included; they snap in and can be used altogether, or just one at a time, depending on the absorbency you’re going for.
Each insert is 2 layers of heavy organic bamboo fleece and the top and middle layers are cotton velour. This is an incredibly absorbent, night-worthy combo. After prepping Melissa’s diaper I went ahead and tested it out big time. Susanna wore this fitted for 4 hours during a long day of running errands. It was soaked, but no leaks out of our diaper cover. Very encouraged, I washed it and the next time tried it overnight. Again bulletproof. This diaper is so thirsty and so reliable it’s what I now reach for when I know Susanna’s going to go hours without a change. I put a fleece liner inside to keep her skin feeling dryer and more comfortable.
The great thing about a fitted is that the entire diaper soaks up and holds in wetness – not just the inserts (like with pockets, prefolds, AI2’s, etc.).
Samuel’s pocket diaper is waterproof PUL on the outside with an outer space cotton print on the wings, suedecloth inner and two bamboo inserts:
This is a really well-made pocket diaper and the two bamboo inserts are very absorbent and silky soft. They don’t hold onto odor like microfleece inserts tend to do. As you can see from the picture, the fit is trim and snug. I like how the double snaps on the wings keep them secure and in place. No drooping or sagging at all. Samuel loves this diaper and calls them his “space pants.” The only the thing I would change is the inner lining, because I prefer microfleece to microsuede. The latter tends to be less soft and attracts more lint.
We are 100% happy with our ChunkaButt Creations diapers! More and more, I am appreciating the beauty and quality and uniqueness of WAHM cloth diapers. There’s just nothing better than an adorable diaper that’s made with love, does it job and is different from anything you’ll find anywhere else.
