You all know how much I love to support work-at-home businesses, especially when it comes to diapers. It’s very rewarding to work with another mother who not only uses cloth, but has developed a unique product you won’t find anywhere else. So I was very happy to get a chance this week to try out a Zookies diaper cover! Zookies is owned by Michele, a mom of “two little Zooks,” who says she dreamed up the business while “searching for something that I could do in my comfy pj’s.” Currently looking for part-time help to keep up with the task of creating cute diapers, Michele is a one-woman-show right now!
Zookies offers PUL covers of all sizes in some of the cutest prints you’ll ever see! She also offers a one-size option, which we thought would be perfect for me to try out on both 7-month-old Susanna and 2-year-old Samuel. My one-size Zookies cover arrived all tied up with a pretty ribbon. The print is called “Hearts on Blue” and it’s accented with black trim and black snaps.
This is a very well-made cover, featuring sturdy PUL inside, soft cotton on the outside, fold-over elastic and super strong snaps.
After prepping, Samuel got to try it first and I quickly realized that one of my favorite things about this cover is the fact that two additional hip snaps are placed up front to prevent wing droop. Sagging wings is one of my biggest diapering “pet peeves” so I really appreciate this feature. Another great thing about Zookies is you can use it on its own as as swim diaper.
Samuel is 2 years old and has a pretty chubby middle. For him I used just the first row of snaps on the rise.
He’s wearing a Flip organic insert inside. Such a cute little cover!
My next tester was 7 month old Susanna, who weighs in at 16 pounds right now. She’s chubby but small so for her I moved up the rise snaps to the smallest setting and got a nice snug fit. Inside I laid a Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefold and a small velour doubler. The Zookies cover held it all in snugly and we had no leaks.
I was able to wipe the inside of my Zookies cover to freshen it up and get a few more uses out of it before laundering. And that was great, because Susanna was enjoying her new pants tremendously.
Since Zookiess are made with a PUL inner and a cotton outer, they may or may not work for your baby overnight. However, since I’m curious I did test my Zookies out last night using my “bulletproof” nighttime solution which consist of a Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefold and a Thirsties Duo Hemp Insert. There was no wicking or leaking and Susanna’s clothes were dry this morning. She only woke up once to nurse in the night, so of course that helped.
I’m sure you’ll love Michele’s Zookies covers as much as I love mine. Her diaper covers range in price from $10 to $18.50, depending on size and style. You’ll also love the other sweet things she has in her online store, like wet bags & wipes, coordinating baby sets (perfect for a shower gift) and even handmade soap. Mothers who are new to cloth diapering should check out her “Infant Try It” package which includes all the basics for under $50 to get you started with cloth. This great package deal includes 1 dozen unbleached Indian prefolds, 2 Zookies covers and a Snappi. And don’t forget to check the Zookies bargain bin for steals!
