UPDATE 2019: Happy Heinys was changed to Happy Heiny, and now appears to be closing down.
Since I cloth diaper primarily to save money, and because I happen to have 3 children in cloth right now (whew!), there are three things that are very important to me when trying out a product: ease of use, quality and value for the money.
I just purchased the cutest owl print Happy Heinys one-size pocket diaper from a local children’s boutique and was eager to try it out on baby Susanna. Here’s what I found:
Ease of Use – The Happy Heinys goes on and off very quickly, almost as fast as a disposable diaper. In fact, pockets might as well be called Diapers for Dummies because they are ridiculously simple to use. Stuff whatever you want in the pocket, snap it on baby and you’re done. The pocket on the Happy Heinys is wide and roomy; I was able to get my whole arm in there, so stuffing is a breeze. This particular diaper comes with 1 small insert and 1 regular insert. You can use one or both, depending on your baby’s age and size, and how frequently you will be changing your little one. This diaper is super easy to wash, too, and dries more quickly than thick prefolds or bamboo/hemp diapers.
Two things I LOVED right off: the nice stretchy waist tabs and the double row of waist snaps (no wings curling back or sagging).
Quality – The Happy Heinys are made with durable, thick PUL, super strong snaps and ultra soft microfleece. I looked over every inch of this diaper and noted how well made they are. This “new and improved” version even has top stitching and sturdily sewn leg casings.
Value for the Money – For $18.95 you get one Happy Heinys diaper and two inserts. It’s higher than many other pocket diapers out there, but those are the cheaper imported versions that don’t have as many “bells and whistles” as the Happy Heinys – reinforced seams, double waist snaps, 2 inserts included, a unique selection of colors and prints, etc.
The quality and durability of this diaper is well worth the price, as is the service behind the product. And did I mention you get to choose from more than 40 different prints and colors? I only have a few pocket diapers in my stash but the few I have are very high quality and will last for multiple children.
Here is the diaper opened up so you can see the adjustable snaps at the waist. The rise has been snapped down to its smallest setting (Susanna is 5 months old) so the snaps there are hidden from view.
Look how big the opening is! I love this feature because I’ve been frustrated in the past with poor quality pockets that are a struggle to get your hand in.
